Just before I go to Antarctica, we’re having our department’s biggest event of the year—an event to celebrate our students’ research projects they’ve been working on all year.
At our Aquarium we have a unique opportunity for students called the Young Scientists Program. It’s a free research mentoring program that teaches middle school and high school students how to design and carry out independent research. During their investigations, our young scientists conduct original science projects on Southern California marine life and ecosystems that lead to new discoveries (and sometimes honors at local, county, state and even international science fairs).
Every year our young scientists present their research at the Young Scientists Symposium. Student researchers lead science demonstrations, give poster presentations and research talks. The event is open to the public to meet the 42+ students, learn more about their projects or learn how to become young scientists themselves.
In addition to all of the students’ hard work and demonstrations, we’ll be doing some fun PolarTREC things at the Symposium as well!
We hope to unveil a new mini-exhibit I’ve been working on, based on our upcoming Antarctic Expedition as well as the work of other PolarTREC scientists.
There will be a demonstration table where people can try on the Extreme Cold Weather gear.
I’ll be giving a short talk about our upcoming research on Antarctic Ice Stream Dynamics.
