Spring has arrived in Basel

Today was a beautiful big blue sky day, the first real day of Spring this year in Basel. It started with a beautiful sunrise and a walk to school as it slowly got lighter. Along the way I could hear the birds singing. I took advantage of the nice day and had lunch outside with my colleagues.

After school, I walked home to enjoy the sunshine a little longer. In Basel we often have cloudy winters, and it was so nice to have so much sunshine. Temperatures were in the mid 60s and flowers were in bloom everywhere. When I came home, there were bees and beetles buzzing around my balcony. It was lovely, and I wanted to share a little of the joy.

I couldn't help but be struck by the idea that in less than two weeks, I'll be in Alaska where the spring will look much like winter. At one of our two field sites, we even expect enough snow that we will use snow machines to get around! It will most likely be cold, but the weather can also change quite rapidly, so I'm not sure what I'm in store for yet. I have a feeling it will be a little different than the weather I'm experiencing this week, so I'm planning to take advantage of the warmer weather before setting off for the Arctic.

What a beautiful walk to work! Just to update you, Anchorage had 10 inches of snow between last night and today and the schools are closed! So, yes, my guess is that there will be snow when you head to Alaska. Enjoy the blue skies and flowers while you can!

Jen, I can't believe that squirrel girl is headed out in only two weeks! I am looking forward to following your journals. When will know when your Polar Connect will be scheduled? You are a minor celebrity with some of my students, so I am hoping they get to see you live.

Thanks Judy. It's mostly farmland, so it is quite beautiful. Will try to get my fill of the new leaves and blue skies while I'm here.

Hi Rebecca. I can't believe it's time either! I'm working out the date just now, and will let you know when it will be exactly, but count on sometime the week of April 24. It will probably be about 9am your time - I hope that works. I'd hate to let down my biggest fans!
