How does this year compare with last?

Aloha Emily!

I logged into the webinar exactly 4 hours after it occured. No wonder nobody was there :(

Just wondering if you could ask some of the researchers that were on the Healy last year, to compare last year's observations with this years. Just wondering about-
a. the thickness and quantity of the ice
b. the genera and quantity of ice algae
c. the timing of the peak of the algae bloom
d. the content of the benthos (more nutrients, presence of microfauna)
e. the presence of megafauna (birds and mammals.

Also, any bird experts with you this year? I had the good fortune of seeing a short tailed albatross on Midway Island back in January. They are pretty rare birds. Did the ornithologists have a chance to see short tailed or Laysan or black footed albatross?

Lastly, are you making sorbet this year? What flavor?

warmly,

Maggie

Hartford High Thanks You.

Dear Emily,

Thank you for your help answering our questions! My ninth grade Biology class has been talking about your expedition and what it takes to ask a good scientific question. We were able to generate a lot of discussion from your answers and talk about what makes a significant question. Hartford High is a small high school of 800 students in the Upper Connecticut River Valley of Vermont, close to Dartmouth College. There are several New England Villages that send students to Hartford High, including the small town of White River Junction. So we are small rural and have some suburban students. A good mix.

Thank you for your help.

Good luck on your work!

Sincerely,

Robert Harris

ms. davenport,

i was wondering how long does it usually take to get a core sample from the multicorer, and if it is easy to operate?

The Cores

Hello,

First off, congratulations on what your doing. I have a question regarding the cores. What do you think is the exact reason the cores have not been as good as you would like?

Thanks, Aaron

Hello,

I was wondering why do the radon levels change at different depths of the core. and do the levels go down or up the further down the core you go.

Hello,

I was wondering why nitrogen doesn't have any affect on the sediment but oxygen does. Is there an easier way to filter it?

thanks.

Hi Emily,

When you were using the ROV, looking at mud samples or just observing other animals, did you ever come across a species you couldn't identify?

I hope your trip is going well!
