Parade

Happy early 4th of July! Maybe your theme should be something related to "purple mountains majesty" since that is where we will be thinking about you on the 4th! Don't forget lots of stars since you don't see many of them around there this time of year! Well, maybe not great ideas, but Dad suggests Merry Christmas 4th of July since you are in the right setting for that! Mom

Wind

The video from your June 30 post really does begin to give a sense of what the wind and drifting must be like at Summit Camp. Isn't it hard to work in those conditions? Will you be bringing back the Montana and MSU flags that are wind torn from the looks of them on the video to go in the artifact box? Keep warm! Mom

Update on your cracked nose.

I saw the flesh wound that was created for the simulation, but what in the heck is going on with your nose? Don't leave us hanging here not knowing if you will be needing a nosectomy, :)

Waste Water & Calories Have Got To Go Somewhere!?!

“my friend Craig”, that is how I describe the cool guy I know who is sleeping every night in a tent, below zero, on top of 2.5 miles of glacial ice in Greenland. I have been following your journal every day and I have bragged to lots of people about this cooool guy I know. Therefore, I must apologize for not writing more often.

Anyway, I must say that your journal entries are great and I would love to get a chance to camp out and work at Summit Camp. I do have a question and 2 requests:

1.	Now that you have shown us where the water comes from, could you explain where the waste water, sewage and garbage go? How do they keep the camp clean?
2.	I really liked the way you explained the calories plus cold plus exercise equals weight loss realities of Arctic field work to your wife. Could you make that into a journal entry?

I hope that you take time to put the tools down and just soak in the experience that you are having. Thanks for sharing your adventure with all of us.

“your friend”,

Bacl;it snow pit

Hi - Great pictures and scientific information on you June 26 blog. I was just wondering about the background on the "Changing the Guard". Is it a hydrolic lift on a building that can be raised when the snow drifts? How and when does it work? Who decides when things like that are needed? Do you think you could bring some of the backlit snow back to Billings to show the kids. Did you find out about bringing back a "bunny suit"? Very interesting science! Viv (your mom)

GO BOBCATS!

Mr Beals (aka Craig),

I love the pictures of the Bobcat Flag! Your spirit and loyalty is well represented.

I have a question for you. Since the temp is much cooler there then your body is used to, you must be burning additional calories just to stay warm and maintain a core body temp. I've been reading about all of the fantastic meals you've been eating (jealous by the way!) and wonder this...with your increased caloric intake have you gained/lossed weight during your stay in Greenland?

Go Bobcats! (that's how you should sign your journals!)

christi & danger (your wife & dog)

Whirlwind Tour

Hi Craig,

I was wondering how the logistics for the dignitary visit were worked out. Who actually makes the plan and schedules for an event such as that?

Were the scientists satisfied with the visit? Since you were with the press, did you have the opportunity to interview them - is this the type of thing they usually do, or for them was it a big deal?

I'm continually amazed by the goings-on at Summit!

Keep up the good work,

Cathy

video

Hey - the picture of the diamond dust halo was fantantic from your June 23 journal! I was now able to run the video, and it is an amazingly clear view of the ice sheet you live on. It helps me imagine the vast expanse of ice the traversing crew went over. Was the sound heard on the video from the wind or what moves the tethersond? Was the strip to the left of the Big House the landing field and or soccerfield? I really enjoy seeing all the pictures from Summit Camp! Viv
