Tim Martin
About
Although he grew up in several locations around the country, Tim Martin has always felt most at home in the natural world. His persistent curiosity led to his undergraduate study of the natural sciences and art at Goshen College and recently he completed his M.S. in teaching geosciences through Mississippi State University. Whether using recent data for weather forecasting, seismograms for mapping plate tectonics, or making real-time observations with an Internet accessible radio telescope, Mr. Martin has a passion for bringing real time science into his Earth Science classroom at Greensboro Day School. In his free time, he may be found "up close and personal" with earth science while rock climbing with his family. Mr. Martin is excited to be a Polar TREC teacher as he sees Lake El'gygytgyn as an important crossroads for geology, climatology, and planetary science. For more information about Mr. Martin, his class, and his previous earth Science adventures, visit Tim's Adventure Earth Science web site.

Hi Heidi,
I too, as a lake sediment (Mud) driller, am interested in your answer to the question about which is easier...
I had to note the work schedule you posted... must be nice drilling 24 hrs/day in 3 shifts ...{read more}
Mike,
I am REALLY envious of you getting to try the Water Skiing! That is AWESOME!!!! Although no expert, I can get up on skis and would love to say I skied on the Arctic Ocean! Of course when I was up at the Arctic Ocean a few months ago, we were walking on 1 or 2 meters of ice!

Most of the measurements to start to figure out the climate record will be started this fall. What we did up at Lake E was to collect the samples for more detailed study in labs in Europe and the US so we are not ready to make any conclusions yet...
As far...{read more}
Thanks for writing,

{read more}Hi Betsy,
I am home now and the temp is 87 F... I am ready to go back to the -10! I guess with this weather the idea of taking a shower every day seem a little more likely!
Glad you had a good time up in Barrow. One of these days I will go back and read your expedition journal...{read more}
Hi Taylor
There were so many... sunrises coated with diamond dust, Helicopter flights, finding impact glass, working on the drilling rig the day we hit the impact rocks, all were un-forgetable. Possibly the most memorable was watching the Aurora on the full moon night.

As I said regarding memorable experiences, there were so many. One of the best sights was looking at the natural snow and ice arches in the snow drifts on the lake. Take a look at the video posted on 4/22 and you will get an idea why I love this place!

I am home now and I am sorry my reply did not show up when I posted it over a week ago.
So for a quick answer... the bits we used were replaced when we drilled through different type of material, different bits were used for hard clay, soft clay, sand/gravel, and rock...{read more}
Emily,
Sorry that you did not get this reply earlier... I tried to reply 2X from Russia and I suppose the post was lost.
I can say now that I am home, IT IS HOT !!! This 90 degree weather is crazy... I am ready to go back to the -10!
While in Russia I never was really cold...{read more}
The only one we saw was the lone wolf in the photo...and he/she is staying at the lake... and that is likely a good thing. I am not sure I would want to run into a family with cubs unless it was obvious that there was lots of available food!
