Matthew Moore teaches High School Biology, AP Environmental Science, Lake Ecology, Conservation Biology, and Field Biology at Kents Hill School in Kents, Maine. Mr. Moore is very interested in climate science, in particular how anthropogenic factors of climate change may be influencing arctic ecosystems and cultures. Mr. Moore was very happy to broaden his knowledge and skills by participating in this expedition in order to better teach young people about the Earth’s ecosystems and their role in it.

Reindeer and Seals in Svalbard

The reindeer are native and a subspecies of the caribou. Their scientific name is Rangifer tarrandus platyrhynchus. They are more closely related to Canadian caribou then they scandanavian reindeer, although the caribou in Norh America are considerably taller and larger....{read more}

Research progress

Hi Janet, Busy morning here at Kap Linne. We've got three polar bears (not those from the storybook) on the beach close to camp. So, we're hanging close to camp until things mellow out a bit. I'm sure Matt will post on this later with some cool pics!

We were on a layover in Oslo, so Al played tour guide to us newbies and called a cab for us to go into the city for a couple of hours. The cab flatted on the highway and Al jumped out to help the cabbie who was working with cars and trucks wiping by him. We made it to Oslo alive...{read more}

Svalbard Research Site

Hi Kristin,
