The largest scientific instrument, The IceCube kilometer square photocollector array, is still being built! Looking at the data that's already been collected it's a fun mental jump to imagine the photocollectors in the ice, picking up the photons, imagining how a streak of light (visible or invisible) would stretch through the many meters of ice... After my trip in 2011 all of the photocollector strings should be set in the ice and then the fun will return stateside where the researchers will crunch data from distinct collected events. I'm hoping to get a bit of hands on data analysis experience and to share the pattern finding with my students!
