“my friend Craig”, that is how I describe the cool guy I know who is sleeping every night in a tent, below zero, on top of 2.5 miles of glacial ice in Greenland. I have been following your journal every day and I have bragged to lots of people about this cooool guy I know. Therefore, I must apologize for not writing more often.

Anyway, I must say that your journal entries are great and I would love to get a chance to camp out and work at Summit Camp. I do have a question and 2 requests:

  1. Now that you have shown us where the water comes from, could you explain where the waste water, sewage and garbage go? How do they keep the camp clean?
  2. I really liked the way you explained the calories plus cold plus exercise equals weight loss realities of Arctic field work to your wife. Could you make that into a journal entry?

I hope that you take time to put the tools down and just soak in the experience that you are having. Thanks for sharing your adventure with all of us.

“your friend”,

Jeff

Jeff!

I cannot wait for your Oden Expedition to learn all about the "other" side of the world!

Your waste water question is fantastic!!! But are you sure your really want to know the truth?!
I'll assume that you do! There are 3 outhouses in camp. These are placed over a large, deep hole and everything that goes it...stays in. Out at Sat Camp we have a small tent with a bucket. All waste must be bagged and carried back to the main camp and disposed of inside the outhouses! We have 2 "flush" toilets in camp (no toilet paper allowed in them though) that have pipes deep into the ice. Everything that goes down...stays down.
So, I am sure that archeologists in the distant future will study these "pits" to see how humans lived and ate on top of the ice!
Hey...you asked!
All garbage is flown out on outgoing flights. The staff builds elaborate pallets that fit into the C-130. All cardboard is broken down and placed around the perimeter of the pallet for recycling and all cans are placed in a recycling bin.

I will work on the calorie journal idea. Any suggestions?

Take Care!
Stay Warm!!
Hope this answers your question.
