Dear Craig,

Students are familiar with the Bering Sea from The Deadliest Catch. When are the seas the calmest? There appear to be two fishing seasons on the series. Is this true? Will you be out on the seas during one of these seasons?

The most lucrative season for crabbing is during the fall and winter months, typically late Oct-Jan. However, the season varies depending on the species being targeted. Red King Crab has 2 separate seasons in Sept and Oct, bairdi Tanner crab season is mid-Oct to late March, and opilio Tanner crab season is mid-Jan to the end of May. So, yes, I expect to see crabbers in Dutch Harbor at some point. We will be out on the Healy during crab season, we'll see if it is as rough as depicted on the TV show. It will only add to the adventure!
