Look who’s following! Seton Catholic School and Lakeland Elementary

Seton Catholic School

Seton Catholic School in Moline, Illinois, is a fully accredited school, which complies with high academic standards that promote quality schools and continuous improvement towards enhanced student achievement.

Seton Catholic School is also emphasizing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in all curriculum areas.

And what a perfect fit! Our team will incorporate Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in numerous areas of our research. So, watch for these in upcoming journals.

What has Seton been up to?

Mrs. Ahlgren’s science class began the school year by looking at the Antarctica Revisited webpage, reading my blogs and studying a Weddell seals, penguins, glaciers, Antarctica, etc. Next came the ‘Fly a Flag’ project! All the students designed a preliminary flag on paper and then voted for the ‘best’ design. The top four designs were then transferred to the actual flag to be flown in Antarctica. The 6th graders especially are pretty excited about this assignment!

Seton students are also always learning and putting good health and exercise habits into practice! And what a wonderful way to link to the Get Fit challenge!

In Mrs. Burau’s art class, Seton students are in the process of making papier mache animals. One student chose to do a penguin representing Antarctica!

Lakeland Elementary

At Lakeland Elementary School, the teachers and staff are proud to support a continuous atmosphere of learning and growth for each of their students. They strive to expose their students to various learning experiences that foster higher thinking and inquiry. The teachers find that relating hands-on experiences to studying animal habitats, continents and the scientific process will make learning more interesting.

And in my humble opinion, there’s no better way to do so, than to have your students join in on a trip to Antarctica!

I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the second and fifth grade classes and sharing details on my upcoming scientific trip to Antarctica.

Look for this flag in an upcoming journal!

Prior to my visit, the students learned about the continent of Antarctica and some of the challenges my team and I will face during my research. They also learned about the characteristics of the Weddell seal and its place in the Antarctic food chain.
