6 December 2012 Working And Playing At Terra Nova

In many ways the Italian base, Terra Nova, is similar to McMurdo. There are a lot of politics and waiting for weather. When we first arrived, we started installing stations immediately; it looked as if we were going to finish ahead of schedule. Then, numerous weather delays and communication issues with McMurdo forced us into completing as many sites as possible when the weather cleared. This however has left us with many days off and little to do to pass the time. While in the field, the use of the helicopters and the beautiful scenery made our job much more interesting and enjoyable. We had to remind ourselves to slow down and admire the surroundings. Even though using the helicopters made transferring equipment more difficult, the views from its many windows made it worthwhile. I’m now a strong believer that any commute via helicopter is more interesting. At the Italian base, the people and food have been outstanding. In classic Italian fashion, a gourmet chef cooks daily for us. I have found a new appreciation for meals I would not have eaten at home. Even though the meal schedule is odd with breakfast between 7-8, lunch 1-2, dinner 8-9, we greatly anticipate what will be served. I found the weekend meals especially interesting with huge portions of pasta, fish, beef and fresh bread. Saturday's pizza buffet was my favorite! The sites here were some of the most amazing places I have ever been. I made two videos that portray working and playing at Terra Nova.
