From the NOAA National Weather Service: Hazardous Weather Conditions off the coast of Barrow. Gale Warning in Effect from September 2, 02:30 PM AKDT until September 3, 04:00 AM AKDT
NOAA defines a Gale Warning as a to indicate winds within the range 34 to 47 knots are forecast for the area. The knot is a term typically used in meteorology, and in maritime and air navigation. The term originates from a method sailors once used to measure their speed at sea. They would tie knots in a long line at regular intervals, then throw one end of the line with a weighted piece of floating wood out behind their ship. As the ship moved forward, the number of knots let out would be counted over a specific period of time. This would allow sailors to calculate the distance and speed at which the ship was moving. Pretty neat trick wasn't it! Oh, and one knot is one nautical mile (about 1.15 statute miles or 1.852km) per hour.

When the weather's not cooperating, sometimes researchers can get a little creative with their time. Steve's birthday was just a few days ago, and while he eats very nutritious meals most of the time....Well, let's just say that he loosens-up his nutritional reins a bit in Barrow!
...and the following morning....
