Hello, My name is Luke Maillefer, I was born in a suburb outside of Chicago. Growing up I spent most my time outside, running around and exploring the great outdoors. Over the years spending time in nature has helped shape my identity and encouraged many of my interests. Going into the JASE expedition I am excited to learn more about Antarctica and the opportunities that will be revealed there.
I am a Junior at Monona Grove High School, a small school located outside of Madison, Wisconsin that enduringly we call MG. At MG students we students are are encouraged to pursue our goals and to take the road to higher education. There is a strong sense of community at MG, mostly surrounding sports. I am also a huge supporter for our teams, but at times I feel like there is a lack of interest in other areas of the school, like science. I hope that going on this trip and sharing with my school our experiences will help spark more students interests in the science world. And also bring bring more attention to the science related activities going on in our school.
During the school year I am a three sport athlete, participating in Cross-Country, Swimming, and Tennis. Sports have always been a big part of my life, Sports have introduced me to some great people, helped me stay active, and learn how to be a team player. In school my favorite courses are usually History and Science. History provides me with information on the past, and Science gives me a better understanding of the world around me. Going on this trip will help me make connections between dry written labs and the actual methods that go on in field research.
Outside of school I enjoy reading, photography, hiking, art, running, birding (anything outdoors really), and hanging out with my friends and family. I volunteer at the UW Arboretum where I spend time walking trails and assisting with small research projects. Hobbies like photography and birding have helped me to appreciate nature. I also love to travel. Twice I have lived in Switzerland and I have also visited many other places around the world. Traveling has helped me experience new cultures, and environments, and given me a better understanding on how other people live their lives. I am excited to meet with students of different cultures on this trip and getting to know them.
For most of my life I have dreamed of becoming a Scientist. This trip will give me a chance to interact with people with similar interest to me, and also give me an insight to what the life of a scientist could look like. A lot of students do not get to study what they are interested in until college, so I feel very fortunate for this opportunity to have come to me in High School. I am super excited to participate in this trip of a lifetime and to see what it has in store!

Hola, me llamo Luke Maillefer. Nací en un suburbio de Chicago. Al ir creciendo, pasé gran parte de tiempo al aire libre, corriendo y explorando la naturaleza. El pasar tanto tiempo explorando la naturaleza ha forjado mi identidad y ha dado forma a mis intereses. Estoy muy emocionado por las muchas oportunidades que la expedición JASE me brindará.
Curso el quinto año de bachillerato en la escuela Mona Grove High School, una pequeña escuela ubicada a las afueras de Madison, Wisconsin, a la que cariñosamente llamamos MG. En MG se nos motiva a todos a perseguir nuestras metas y a seguir el camino a educación superior. Hay un gran sentido de comunidad, principalmente alrededor de los deportes. You también apoyo mucho a nuestros equipos, pero al mismo tiempo pienso que a veces hay una falta de interés por otras áreas en nuestra escuela, como las ciencias. Espero que este viaje asi como el compartir nuestras experiencias logre encender la chispa para que más estudiante se interesen or el mundo científico. Y que también brinden más atención a las actividades relacionadas con la ciencia que se desarrollan en la escuela.
Durante el año escolar compito en tres deportes: Carreras a campo traviesa, nataci´n y tenis. Los deportes siempre han sido importantes en mi vida. A través de ellos he conocido gente maravillosa. También me han ayudado a mantenerme activo y a aprender a ser un mejor jugador de equipo. Mis cursos favoritos en la escuela suelen ser historia y ciencias. Los cursos de historia me permiten obtener información sobre el pasado, y la ciencia me da un mejor entendimiento del mundo que me rodea. Este viaje me permitirá conectar los tediosos reportes de laboratoria con los métodos actuales de investigación de campo.
Fuera de la escuela disfruto de la lectura, fotografía, senderismo, arte, correr, observar pájaros (cualquier cosa al aire libre, de verdad), y pasar el tiempo con los amigos y la familia. Soy un voluntario en el arboreto de la Universidad de Wisconsin donde paso el tiempo caminando por los senderos y ayudando en pequeños proyectos de investigación. Los pasatiempos de fotografía y la observación de aves me han ayudado a apreciar la naturaleza. También me encanta viajar. He vivido dos veces en Suiza, y también he visitado otras partes del mundo. El viajar me ha permitido vivir otras culturas y entornos, y me ha dado un mejor entendimiento de cómo vive la gente de otras partes. Esoy muy emocionado de conocer en este viaje, a estudiantes de otras culturas.
La mayor parte de mi vida he soñado con convertirme en un científico. Este viaje me dará la oportunidad de interactuar con gente de intereses similares los míos, y de darme una idea de cómo es la vida de un científico. La mayoría de la gente no puede estudiar lo que les interesa antes de la universidad, por lo que me siento muy afortunado de tener esta oportunidad como estudiante de bachillerato. ¡Estoy super emocionado de poder participar en este viaje único y de ver que es lo que se avecina!
