My name is Claire Hacker, and I live in Cottage Grove, Wisconsin. I'm a senior at Monona Grove High School in Monona, which is near Wisconsin's capital: the lovely city of Madison. Just as Madison encompasses a huge variety of cultures, Monona Grove's nine hundred-some students have very diverse interests both inside and outside of school. My personal interests in school include science classes, Spanish, and orchestra, although really I enjoy learning about anything. At school I am also involved in Math Team and Spanish Club. Last year, I played in the pit orchestra for our school musical, which was an incredibly fun challenge. I am also a member of the National Honor Society.
When I'm not at school or doing homework, you can probably find me playing the violin. I began playing eight years ago, and since then, music has added to my life immensely. For the past six years, I have been a member of the Wisconsin Youth Symphony Orchestras, which is comprised of four orchestras of progressing skill level. I currently play in the organization's premier orchestra, the Youth Orchestra. We rehearse every Saturday during the school year and give several concerts per season. However, this year is extra special for us; in July, the Youth Orchestra will be touring in Argentina for 11 days. I can hardly believe I have the opportunity to visit South America once this year, let alone twice.
Girl Scouting is another activity that competes for a share of my time. I have been active in Girl Scouts for ten years, and it has given me a wide variety of experiences. My troop is a Mariner Ship, which means that we travel around the state to compete against other Scouts in water-based competitions called regattas. However, this past June, my troop was able to travel far beyond the boundaries of our state. After years of planning, fundraising, and lots of hard work, six of us traveled to Europe for two weeks. Our time there was incredible, and we returned feeling worldly and more like a family than ever. Outside of my troop, I have also served on a committee that created a summer camp for girls. Called CampHERO, the camp's goal is to educate girls about the protective services while encouraging them to try new things. Volunteering on this committee has not only allowed me to help inspire hundreds of girls but has also given me a real sense of what it means to be a responsible teammate.
If I do happen to find myself with spare time, I may panic. After the initial shock, however, I enjoy reading, baking, listening to music, kayaking, and generally being outdoors.
I am excited and honored to be part of this project because I cannot imagine anything more fitting of my interests. I am very interested in other cultures and in broadening my view of the world, and I know this program will give me that opportunity. JASE also excites me because of its scientific aspects. I plan to study biology in college, and marine biology has interested me for years. Through this program, I will experience the reality of being a scientist and researcher, an opportunity that I value highly, especially as I try to define my future. For me, this project will be a challenging, new experience, yet one that I will most certainly enjoy and grow from. I look forward to gaining a better understanding of the world and my part in it, both scientifically and culturally.

Me llamo Claire Hacker y vivo en Cottage Grove, Wisconsin. Estudio el último año de bachillerato en la escuela Monona Grove High School, la cual está cerca de la hermosa capital de Wisconsin, la ciudad de Madison. Así como Madison tiene gran diversidad de culturas, los más de novecientos estudiantes de Monona Grove High School tienen diversidad de intereses dentro y fuera de la escuela. Mis intereses escolares incluyen ciencias, español y orquesta, aunque en realidad me gusta aprender de todo. También estoy involucrada en la escuela en el Equipo de Matemáticas y el Club de Español. El año pasado toqué música en el pit de la orquesta durante el musical de la escuela, el cuál fué un reto increíblemente divertido. También soy miembro del National Honor Society.
Cuando no estoy en la escuela o haciendo tareas, probablemente me puedes encontrar tocando el violín. Empecé a tocar a los ocho años, y desde entonces, la música ha formado gran parte de mi vida. He sido miembro de la Orquesta Sinfónica Juvenil de Wisconsin (Wisconsin Youth Orchestra), de la que forman parte cuatro orquestas de diferente nivel. Actualmente toco el violín en la orquestra principal de la organización, la Youth Orchestra. Practicamos cada sábado durante el año escolar y damos varios conciertos por temporada. Sin embargo, este es un año extra especial para nosotros, ya que la Youth Orchestra se va de gira a la Argentina por 11 días. No puedo creer que tenga la oportunidad de ir a América del Sur no sólo una vez, sino dos.
Otra actividad que compite por mi tiempo es la de Girl Scouts. He sido una Girl Scout por diez años, durante los cuales he tenido un montón de experiencias muy variadas. My tropa se llama Mariner Ship, esto significa que viajamos por el estado para competir con otras tropas Scouts en competencias acuáticas llamadas regatas. Pero lo más emocionante es que el pasado junio, mi tropa logró viajar lejos de las fronteras de nuestro estado. Tras varios años de planeación, recaudación de fondos y mucho trabajo, seis de nosotras viajamos por Europa durante dos semanas. Lo pasamos increible todo ese tiempo, y regresamos muy orgullosas y sintiéndonos más como una familia. Fuera de mi tropa, también he servido en un comité que creó un curso de verano para niñas. El campamento se llama CampHERO, y su meta es educar a niñas para que intenten hacer muchas cosas muy variadas. El ser voluntaria en este comité no sólo me ha permitido ayudar a motivar a cientos de niñas, también me ha enseñado lo que significa el ser un miembro responsable de un equipo.
Si llego a encontrarme con tiempo libre entre las manos, me da un ataque de pánico. Después del shock inicial, puedo disfrutar leer, hornear, escuchar música, navegar en kayak y pasar tiempo al aire libre.
Estoy emocionada y honrada de poder ser parte de este proyecto ya que no me imagino proyecto alguno que se amolde tan bien a mis intereses. Me interesan otras culturas y el poder ampliar mi visión del mundo. Sé que este programa me dará esta oportunidad. También me emociona el proyecto JASEn por sus aspectos científicos. Planeo estudiar biología en la universidad, y la biología marina siempre me ha interesado. Mediante este programa, experimentaré lo que significa ser investigadora y científica, una oportunidad a la que le doy mucho valor, ya que me ayudará a definir mi futuro. Para mí, este proyecto representa un gran reto, una nueva experiencia, que me ayudará a crecer. Espero que pueda adquirir un mejor entendimiento del mundo y mi lugar en él, tanto científica como culturalmente.
