Hello everyone, today we gathered at the beach to go on a disaster walk organized by Laura Thomas from Cooperative Extension. The disaster walk was to learn about the 1963 storm surge flood that overwhelmed the then small village of Barrow and neighboring Naval Arctic Research Laboratory. The 12 foot storm surge quickly inundated the community, flooding fresh water lagoons, and destroying coastal buildings. We stopped at different locations on the beach to learn about coastal erosion and mitigation efforts. The city of Barrow has grown tremendously since the 63 event and hazard awareness and preparedness are an important component of a growing community.
