5000 Pounds of Cargo and Counting

Right now, we have an estimated 5000 pounds of cargo, including 700 pounds of PVC pipes for our project. The schlepping is getting serious! Everything has to be rounded up and make its way to the heliport for transporting to Lake Joyce. In preparation, we need to package everything to make sure that it's "helicopter friendly" for being hung from a helicopter by slingload. We also have to identify hazardous cargo like fuel and fire extinguishers and transport them separately. I got to ferret around in our gear cage to find a missing stove to add to the hazardous cargo. I also made sure that all 7 of our personal tents have zippers that work.

Meanwhile, other members of our team inventoried and repacked science equipment. They also assembled part of our sediment traps. Better to find out here that we're missing a piece rather than once we are at Lake Joyce!

    Hi Ms. Coleman,
This is Jason & Frankie. We just wanted to see how you're doing and we hope you're having fun! Is Antarctica as cold as you anticipated, or colder? We hope you'll bring back souveniers for the class or just for your favorite students. (hint hint wink wink Jason & Frankie) (Just Kidding hahahah)

    Your students,

    Hi Jason and Frankie!
Yes, its very cold here. The wind makes it feel much much colder than the temperature says it its. However, the USAP gave me a HEAP of extra clothes, so I’m staying warm!

There is a small shop here that has some sundries and a small souvenir section. Everything is pretty expensive because of the effort needed to get it here!
